Simpson Burgess Nash in charity initiative close to their hearts

Simpson Burgess Nash’s participation in Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning had added meaning when they helped organise an event in support of the initiative.

Sharon Nash, chief executive officer of the Old Trafford based accountancy practice, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. Sharon managed to complete a history degree from the Open University and work part-time as she battled to regain her health. Since her all clear she has led an amicable management buyout from her old firm to set up the Simpson Burgess Nash earlier this year.

World's Biggest Coffee Morning and Macmillan Cancer Support

Unfortunately, more and more people today are diagnosed with cancer and it is said that one in three of us will be directly affected in our lifetime, but nonetheless diagnosis is traumatic and life changing. Optimistically the survival rates increase each year as new and improved treatments are developed. In recognition of invaluable help and support given to cancer victims and their families Simpson Burgess Nash Chartered Accountants decided that we wished to adopt Macmillan Cancer Support as our nominated charity.

Manchester Mark's the new Chair Person

It was with great pleasure we welcomed Mark Simpson of Simpson Burgess Nash as the new Chair of the Manchester group. Mark led a lively discussion on ways and means of developing the network which met with a very enthusiastic response from the members. The buy-in of members in shaping the future will be the key to the success of Network For Health.

Some of the outcomes will result in an increase in news articles, particularly 'advertorials' of members' business presentations. Members will also be able to increase the ranking of their own websites through linking up with other members' sites. Lots of other issues, such as advertising the huge range of skills that we collectively can offer will be pursued immediately.

Network For Health extends to Mark every good wish in his new role and pledges our full support in helping the group to achieve success. This new phase of our development will ensure positive results for all, including our colleagues in Liverpool and Leeds.

Two professional services operations in the north west have been bought by management teams.

Mark Simpson, Mark Burgess and Sharon Nash have acquired the tax, audit and accountancy divisions of Salford Quays-based Frenkels.

24:7's fourth manifestation the best yet

Among the many extra-curricular activities I allow myself to be talked into is a place on the Board of 24:7 Theatre Arts Network Limited, the company that runs the 24:7 Theatre Festival. This has just happened for the fourth time, with 106 performances of 21 productions in non-theatre spaces at Pure and the Midland Hotel.

As I take no part in the creative process of the Festival, I will claim the right to comment that this year's Festival was yet another leap forward from a strong base in 2006. Total audiences rose by around a third, and 20 of the 21 plays received broadly positive reviews in the Manchester Evening News. I saw all 21 of them, and pretty much enjoyed them all, with the very odd exception. My top ten, in a reverse order over which I have agonised, is as follows:

This month is the ninth anniversary of my return to Manchester, and also the ninth anniversary of my networking activity in this city. This began with an introduction to that best organised of networking events, Helen Bennett’s monthly Business Network North networking lunch. At the time this featured about 40 diners, but has now grown exponentially to the point at which an attendance of 120 to 130 is commonplace. And despite my longevity, Helen still succeeds in placing me at tables with people I have never met. The behind the scenes effort that goes into organising these events is phenomenal, and I am delighted to have chance to publicly acknowledge it.

I knew at the age of 13 I wanted to be a chartered accountant. If you think that's sad, bear in mind that I had no idea what one actually did. Somewhere in my impressionable childhood years my father had subtly implanted the idea in my brain. I don't know how he did it, but he did it very effectively.

Office move nightmares

It is about a mile from our old office on Salford Quays to our new one at the Cricket Ground.

I have walked it on numerous occasions; to & from Old Trafford Metro station, to the Cricket Ground itself and, on one memorable occasion, to Stretford Town Hall to help to persuade the Trafford Borough Council Planning Committee to reject the plans to redevelop the Square in Hale Barns.

Accountancy and the arts - strange bedfellows?

I don’t do quiet. Ever since I was a child I have been blessed with a loud booming voice, which makes whispering an impossibility and proximity to me at a sporting event an unwise decision.

It can only have been this feature that persuaded my primary school headmaster, Mr Lohan, that he wanted to use this painfully shy child in the role of rabble-rouser in the school’s production of Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah.
